Terminal server becomes very slow

HI

I am using terminal server 2000 on a windows 2000 server. The server I am
running is a brand new HP DL 380 3.2 ghz xeon with 4 gb RAM.
for some reason my terminal server becomes very slow. I have to literally
shut down the server and restart it.
IT does this once in 2 -3 weeks.
This does for different users at different times.
I am not sure what causes the problem.

Some of my users login to the terminal server and open some applications
like word, outlook. When they are done they log out without closing all these
applications.
When they log back in they see the applications still running and open.
How can I force all the applications and the associated processes to stop
when a user log out or closes the teminal connection?

I think that may be the reason for the server to very slow.

If your users see their running applications when they reconnect,
they have actually never *logged out*, but they have *disconnected*
(usually by simply closing the TS session window).

You cannot easily prevent this from happening, but you can make
sure that disconnected sessions are automatically reset. Note that
any data that is not saved by the users will be lost (like what
they were typing in Word). So you should also put some effort in
user education, or they will be *very* annoyed.

You can set a time-out limit on disconnected sessions, and use
"Reset the session" as the method to use when the time-out limit
has been reached. You do this in TS Configuration Tool, or in a
Group Policy.
 
Imagine an end Citrix user who would minimize their session and then not know
where it went. It was in the tray, but this user was so unskilled that they
just opened up another session. Until the person had 16 sessions going.

This happened at a client site, I know of.

Time outs for user sessions are a political issue as well as technical. But
explain to supervisors of the users that it's monetary. Slowing down others
or using up expensive bandwidth is really money burner.
