I have a problem that I have been trying to fix for a week, I don't want to
re-install as I think that is admitting defeat.

I have a GeForce 3 AGP graphics card in my SN45 Shuttle SFF PC. I was
trying to get the surround sound to work properly and deleted the wrong
Nvidia drivers ( I think ) I think I deleted the Graphics drivers . . .
anyway I'm not quite sure how it happened but in Device Manager at the
bottom of the list of devices I get Unknown, and off that I get the
GeForce3 . . . I have tried old drivers and new driers and I get the same
problem . . . when I boot into Windows I get a blank screen . . I have
also tried a Radeon 9200 AGP card and also a Diamond S3 Virge PCI card . . .
same problem both times.

I can boot OK in safe mode and also in VGA mode . . .

Windows XP Pro SP1 . . . most relevant Updates installed fresh today . . .

Please help if you can, this is really annoying me now . . .

regards, SimonG

Slow, fiery death to all spammers!!!

Go first to the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and remove all references
to the nVidia drivers. The entry should be called nVidia Display Driver.
Ensure you've also removed all references to the unwanted ATI and SiS
drivers.

Go into the Device Manager, right click the Unknown, then Uninstall that
entry.

Reboot the PC.

What does XP now find as New Hardware on bootup.

The current drivers from nVidia are 56.72 and can be downloaded from
www.nvidia.com.

Yep, it's an Nforce 2 chipset and the motherboards drivers are integral
with the Sound, LAN, etc. as I said, a PCI graphics card has the same issue
as the AGP cards I have tried . . .

I have done what you have suggested already . . . except removing the ATi
and SiS drivers because I didn't install them . . . Windows says that it has
found new hardware and identifies it as a GeForce3 . . . but the it still
lists it as Unknown device type . . . I have tried the 56.72 drivers . .
.. When I installed the Radeon card it also identified it correctly but
still put it under type Unknown . . .

thanks for your help . . .

Find the entry for the Unknown.... GeForce3.... right click... select Update
Driver... tell it you will instruct it as to where the drivers are... point
it to the file in which you put the nVidia drivers that you downloaded from
the nVidia site... probably c:\NVIDIA Display Driver\

It should now pick up the right one..... (sometimes you just have to force
the issue when XP is being a bit thick!) Once it's found the driver and
realized that it is your Display Driver, it should reappear where it is
supposed to be in under Display Driver in the Device Manager.

OK, done that and rebooted, now I have Unknown |_NVIDIA GeForce3 with a
yellow exclamation mark on it. Device status says . . . "Windows cannot

Hi Simon

Boot into Safe Mode and then delete **all** references to your video card -
and any other 'video appliance(s)' - you may have onboard (WebCam????) via
Device Manager. Then reboot into 'normal' Mode.

Been there done that . . . but just in case I'll try again . . .when you say
delete all references to my video card . . . I assume you mean uninstall it
and remove the device from the device manager? OK, no drivers to
uninstall, just removed the device from Device Manager and restarted. Boot
normally . . can see the screen, login, new device found . . GeForce3 . .
.. look at device manager . . . Unknown|_ NVIDIA GeForce3 . . . . same as
before . . .

cheers, Simon

PS. Getting closer to a rebuild . . .

Hi Simon

'no drivers to uninstall' - what does that mean? What version driver was
your video card using?

'no drivers to uninstall' - what does that mean? What version driver was

I have used the latest from the Nvidia website but uninstalled them
recently. . . I am currently using VGA drivers . . . if I re-install the
Nvidia drivers I will have a blank screen . . (read my other posts) . . .
