I am running Windows 2003 Standard Edition. I installed the terminal
services. It said the terminal services licensing will expire in 120 days.
Does it mean it need to purchase the terminal services licensing? In
Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Microsoft allowed 2 free terminal services
licensing. Is this changed in Windows 2003?

Thanks.

Remote Desktop for Administration is built-into Windows Server 2003, so if
you just want to allow 2 connections for admins to remotely administer the
server, you shouldn't install Terminal Server, which in 2003 lingo is
Application Server Mode.

Uninstall Terminal Server and enable Remote Desktop for Administration via
the Remote tab in the System Control Panel. No extra licenses are needed.

Best NOT to assume that everything stays the same from on OS to another, but
no worries, we'll get you there.

Thank you very much for your quick response.

I uninstalled Terminal Server and enabled Remote Desktop for
Administration. I was able to Terminal Service to the server with the Admin
permissions. However, the user without the Admin permission was not able to
Terminal Service to the server. He got the error "you do not have access
to logon to this session". I put him in the group Remote Desktop Users. I
also put him in the "Logon Locally". Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks.

In the remote tab of the system control panel applet -> Select Remote Users
-> Add a group that this user is a member of.

Is this a Domain Controller? If so then you'll need to edit the Default
Domain Controllers GPO to give a specific group, other than the defaults the
Logon Locally right.

Thanks so much for your prompt response.

This is not a Domain Controller.

The user was able to Terminal Service from Windows 2000 Professional
computer. However, he got the error message about the logon problem when I
tried to terminal service from Windows XP. Looks like he probably needs to
apply Service Pack 2 on his XP.

Thanks.

Check if the user is using the /console flag with mstsc.exe on the
XP client. This is the default setting if you use the "remote
desktops" utility.

How do you check to see if the user is using "/console" flag? The way he
opens the Terminal Services is by going to Start, Programs, Administrative
Tools, Remote Desktops. Thanks.

Please ignore this message. The user was able to use Terminal Services by
typing mstsc.exe at Start, Run.
Now, I understand your suggestions. Thank you very much.
