I am running Windows XP Professional Ver 5.1.2600 Service pack 2 Build 2600
on a Dell Dimension E510. I have several programs running in backgound
after boot up. I need to temp. remove them to allow installation of soft ware
and or make new partitions of hard drive. Some of the processes are necessary
to keep running and it is hard to determine which ones. Shortly after
getting this new d\Dell, iI accidnetly found a way to press some keys and it
would remove all but the necessary processes, but I can not remember which
ones. Could someone tell me how to do this? Removing them one by one is a
big chore.

Booting into Safe Mode should do it.......

Yep, SafeMode it is. By pressing F8 as Windows just starts to boot, you'll
be able to get into it.

Another shortcut is pressing "Shift" as your profile starts to load. This
will stop the items in your Startup folder from starting (but this isn't all
that loads).
