temporary internet files

When I ask the explorer for the properties of my folder "temp internet files" it tells me that it contains 18000 files in 16 folders with a total of 1.4 GB, but I can see no subfolders, not even "content.IE5" and the desktop.ini is not shown either. I would like to get rid of these files but I don't know how. I tried to do it with the menue in the IExplorer extras, delete files, but it doesn't help. Internet works but the machine is very slow when it accesses the hard drive. Can anybody help me out?

Delete the TIF folder, then reset it's size from Internet Options> General>
Settings to about 50MB.
