Temporarily suspend bootup to be able to read screen

Is there a key/combination that I can use to temporarily suspend bootup so
that I can read the contents of a splash screen which appears only for a
couple of seconds? I thought Esc might do the trick but it doesn't.

You mean the BIOS screen?

If so, hit the pause key. It works on many (but not all) IBM-clones.

If it's within Windows, I can't help you with that.

Try the "Pause" key . . .
