I had a DVD player sitting on the secondary ide cable which I
temporarily replaced with a hard drive to copy some large files over
to my main hard drive. After I put the cable back on the DVD drive,
windows sees the DVD drive but wont allot a drive letter for it saying
that the configuration information in the registry is incomplete or
damaged.

Ive tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers through the Add
Hardware wizard but always wind up back with the same information
about the registry. Ive noticed that about half of the drivers are
unsigned... I dont know if that is the source of my problem or not.

I'd reinstall the drivers from cd, but there's no driver letter to
read the cd from.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Problem fixed by deleting the upperfilter and lowerfilter settings
under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

then uninstalled the drivers for the dvd drive and rebooted twice.
