Hi

I am working in word 2007, how do I attach an existing template to a word
document?

What exactly do you mean? You can't "attach" a document to a document...
 
It was a template - and yes you can, though it may not give the expected
results. From the developer tab on the ribbon > Document Template > Attach.
The developer tab is not shown by default. Add it from Word Options.

So what exactly, does "attaching" one document to another do?

It is still a *template* that is being attached, not a document! Primarily
it changes the paragraph style descriptions to those associated with the
attached template and thereby associates those style formats with the
similarly named styles in the document.

I believe you misread the question. The question was:

how do I attach an existing TEMPLATE to a word document?

The OP wasn't asking about attaching a document to a document.

OK so you're being pedantic. A Template is a "document" in the strict sense
of the word...

No it isn't! A template is a pro-forma layout from which documents are
created or which holds macros, toolbars, autotext entries. A template cannot
be saved as a document and is an entirely different entity from a document
when used with Word.

Yes I realise the EXTENSION is different - you are just making a pedantic
distinction.

If you think that then you haven't the first clue about the way Word
actually works.

There is nothing pedantic in this distinction. A template is a template and
is NEVER a document. You can change the extention but you won't fool Word
into thinking it is anything other than a template.

In this case question, the distinction is huge because you can apply a blank
template to an existing document to force the new templates styles into the
existing document. So if you have a document created from and thus attached
to normal.dot, then apply MyStyles.dot to the document, it is now attached
to MyStyles.dot and will take on all the new formatting.

information. Note, too, that if you change the extension from .dot to .doc,
you have not produced a document: Word still knows it's a template (and vice
versa).

In Word 2007, if you change a .docx file's extension to .dotx or .dotm, Word
2007 won't even open it.

Further, to demonstrate the difference, choose Tools - Templates and Add-ins
(in Word 2007, Developer ribbon tab, click Document Template). Click Attach
and try to attach a .doc file to an existing .doc file. It cannot be done.
Word responds "The document template is not valid".

Gordon might think the difference is pedantic. Word disagrees.
