Templates

I have been trying to find something online to get me started with this, but
so far no result. I figured id try news groups.
I need to be able to define a template and then based on the data that I get
from the database, I need to display a printable format.(HTML, WORD, PDF).
Is there a source that can describe similar task? Any links or advice would
be very helpful. Even something to point me in the right direction.
