Template with data links to an Excel workbook opens VERY slow

I have a report template that has many links to data stored in an excel
workbook. When I start a new report using this template, it takes approx. 10
minutes to open. It used to take longer because of many IF statements in the
fields and I used the SET and REF fields to speed it up a bit but it still
takes 10 minutes. Is there a better way of linking the data to speed up
building the document?

Maybe Rebuild Report Template

Had that same problem once and solved it by building the report template in Excel instead of Word. It ran like lightning and completely avoided the tricky and potentially slow-acting protocols that control the exchange of data between between Word and Excel.
