I have made a template (Word 2000)for use by children which contains two
tables, a couple of graphics and a few lines of prompts. The children
just need to type words into the first of the two tables. Is there any
way of somehow locking them out (similar to a spreadsheet) of the parts
of the template they do not need to access? For instance, the template
is only one page but if they place the insertion point anywhere other
than the table they can expand it to any number of pages by pressing
the return key et, al.
Any help gratefully received

What you are describing is a protected form. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/FillinTheBlanks.htm and especially
the forms tutorials by Dian Chapman that this article links to.

all may benefit.

Note, though, that you'll still want to add something to change the behavior
of the Enter key in the areas where they can type or they can still extend
it over multiple pages. I believe the method for doing this is described or
referenced in Dian Chapman's articles. If not, write back and I'll find the
link.
