I'm using MS Word 2003.

Is there a way to protect a template using the Template
Toolbar option, without also protecting the document
created using the template. I'm finding that the new
document is also protected and I have to use Tools to
unprotect the document before I can change settings such
as page set up or even run the spell check.

Thanks for any help.

I don't know what the template toolbar is. Might you be talking about the
Forms toolbar (has a padlock on it)?

This is used in protected online forms. Check this in help. For more about
online forms, follow the links at <URL:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/FillinTheBlanks.htm> especially Dian
Chapman's series of articles. If you want to use a protected form, normally
the resulting document is also a protected form. You can run spellcheck on
such a form using a macro in the template. See <url:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/MacrosVBA/SpellcheckProtectDoc.htm>.

The normal way to protect a template is to put it in a templates folder and
use File => New to access it. Sometimes the templates folder is made
read-only, especially a workgroup templates folder. Templates can also be
made read-only as a property.

Hope this helps,

I tried your suggestions, but unfortunately making the
templates "read" only is not an option on some of them
because I used the Forms toolbar (drop down buttons, text
form fields, check box form fields) to create the
templates and those only work when the template is
protected (which means the resulting document is
protected). I guess you just can't get there from here.
Thanks anyway.

Please re-read my entire (earlier) answer. You mentioned a templates
toolbar. I don't know what that is! If you use protected forms at all, you
should read the Dian Chapman series of articles. They'll make you much more
productive.

If you want to protect templates from alteration look at my second
suggestion on where to store the templates and how to access them for use.

I did mean the Forms toolbar (with the padlock on it).
Since I'm still fairly new to Word, I'm still trying to
get the lingo down. Anyway, I'm reading over Ms.
Chapman's articles for suggestions. Thank you for the
resource. I'm using the "read only" method right now on
the form documents, but it just seems a shame we can't
utilize those nice VBA form buttons in the templates or
the tab-to-field method. Maybe we'll come up with
something else. Thanks again for your help.
