MS Word 2002 (SP-2)
I want to print on to Record (Index) Cards that are 5" x 3" .
How do I create a template for these ?.

I have printed some that are the correct size
but they would only appear on larger sheets of paper.

Sorry if this is not too clear, I'm fairly new to Word.

Are you trying to print to Index Cards such as the Avery 5388. If so, from
the Tools menu, select Letters and Mailings and then select Envelopes and
Labels and go to the Labels tab and locate that label by clicking on the
Options button. Then click on the New Document button which will give you a
document with a table set up in it to match those labels. If you cannot see
the outline of the labels, open the Tables menu and click on the Show
Gridlines item.

Doug has given you the answer if you're using N-up cards. If you're printing
single cards, then your printer must be able to handle this size. Many
printers do *not* handle paper this small, but if yours does, you should
find that paper size listed on the Paper tab of Page Setup.

Thanks Doug, for prompt reply,

I tried your suggestion but could not find a solution.

These are plain CARDS, not labels, which fit into a small index
box,alphabetically sorted.

I just want to pop a card ( 5" x 3" landscape) into my printer and have
it printed correctly

I went to "page setup" and "custom size" and set it to 5"x3" and this
seems OK
as I can see the image of the card, with required details, on the
screen.

When I try to print it seems that the printer has a different size page
in its' memory and only prints part of the card.

When I use an A4 sheet it prints the correct card size, but only in the
bottom right corner and in Portrait style.

Perhaps you could help further ?

The printer driver may not be able to handle this paper size. The answer is
to use a larger paper size that the printer *will* handle and restrict the
printable area to the size of the card with large margins.

....and this is the primary reason I keep a dot-matrix printer in my
stable. I run a lot of 3x5 cards, and I've found that setting the
custom page size in Word lets me print these pin-feed buggers to me
heart's content!

If you're trying to do this in Publisher, I suggest you post your question
in microsoft.public.publisher.

Publisher is a different program from Word and it does not have the Avery
5388 in the list of available labels.

What you need to do is select Page Setup from the Publisher File menu,
select Index Card as the Publication Type, set the Width to 5" and the
Height to 3", then click on the "Change Copies per Sheet" button and change
the Top Margin to 1", the Side Margin to 1.75" and the Vertical Gap to 0"

The setup should then suit the Avery 5388 label.
