I hope someone can help me with a new problem I am experiencing with Word XP 2003. I have customized the icons the way I like, which as I understand is saved in the \Templates\normal.dot file. I have also dragged links to other tempalte folders to the \Templates\ folder.

Everything works well for a short while, and then suddenly I lose everything in the \Templates\ folder and my toolbars all revert back to the default. I have tried making the \Templates\ folder read-only, normal.dot read only, even set the "prompt to save changes to normal.dot, but nothing works. How can I make this problem go away?

I use explorer to open a lot of word documents - could this be the cause of the problems?

Hello Andre,
I can only reply to your last question. There should be no problem with
opening Word documents from Windows Explorer.
I'm afraid I can't understand about customizing icons and dragging links
into the Templates folder. Perhaps someone else can help you there.
Regards, Jim

Hi Andre,

Are you working on a network where some misguided network administrator is
periodically overwriting user's normal.dot.

Thank you for the replies. I am on a small home network where I am the Admin, so I can rule that out. I suspect that the problem is when I open word documents from others that things go awry, but it has been to random for me to find the pattern. I had hoped someone else had experienced the same and could share their solutions.

I have been having a similar problem with Word and Internet Explorer.

I do a lot of research on the net and sometimes the links lead to filable forms which are in Rich Text Format. I can close the window and open the form in Word without a problem. The problem is when I then try to close the Word document. It states that the Normal.dot has changed and asks if I would like to save it. I have tried saving this file as Normal.old and also ignoring this question. The answer to this question has not seemed to make a difference

Also, if you type Ctl-Alt-Del on the active process you see Winword.exe as an active program. If you say end now, it won't end the program. If you go into IE any link freezes the computer. The only resolution is to manually shut down the program

I have spent a considerable amount of time trying to resolve this issue. The discussion boards seem to indicate that there is some type of conflict created by Word, IE, and RTF files.

Here is what I did today, and both IE and Word both work perfectly with no problems - I removed Norton Antiviris from my computer. I am not sure why this works, but it does, so I'm not going to put it back on.

If you are wondering, I tried adjusting the Norton settings as was suggested in some of the posts. That didn't help. The only thing that has worked is to actually remove the program from my system
