I recently bought a Maxtor 6Y12P0. It is the first drive I have had
that reports its temperature via Active SMART. The default threshold
is 50C. The drive tends to run at slightly over this temperature.

What is considered to be a reasonable range of internal operating
temperature for modern drives?

I've been out of the hardware business for a long time and have not
kept up with changes. Now I'm just a plug and play person!

I can't answer your question directly, but I can comment --

Generally, cooler is better for maximizing drive life.

I try to keep mine below 45C -- right now the drive in this machine
is at 42, and it shows an S.M.A.R.T. "Worst" of 52. It seems to
range between about 39 and about 47, depending on room temp and
drive activity.

I suspect temperature cycling is harmful, in addition to high
temperatures.

I recall seeing life derating information on one of the drive makers'
Web sites for some of their drives. As I recall (but it's been a
while, so don't hold me to this), temps above 60 led to a significant
shortening in life expectancy.

Maxtor says: Maximum 55C, and up to 60C it should not die much
earlier. I would try to get the temperature down to below 45C
under load ASAP. Modern disks need airflow to stay cool enough.

Since heat is a primary HDD killer it is good that you asked...
