What are temporary CDs? AFAIK, they seem to be CDs that work for
a limited amount of time after which they destroy themselves. Is
this true?

If so, can their content be copied, and of so, how? Just
curious...

TIA!

I saw an article about some discs which would behave the same a while
ago in slashdot.

They were supposed to be used in blockbuster as some kind of
'disposable' movies.

I guess their content could be copied (because it could also be played
normally).

The temporary effect was attained by using biotechnology to create a
black layer on the readable surface of the disk thus preventing its
usage past the expiration date, which was around 2 days.

The CDs were called divx.. but that term has now been hijacked for something
else entirely ;)

Yes I remember but not at blockbuster. At local stores, gas stations,
etc where you could grab a move you wanted, open the package to watch
it (and activate the time limit). The test market was a flop. And a
good thing because the disc don't sound like it's fully recycleable
and the non recycleable part would add to landfill.

No DIVX was reuseable if you paid per view. It was the other format
just a few years ago, EZDVD, a self destructing DVD that expires so no
one needs to return it. That market flopped.
