Is there a danger zone temp for a Radeon? I've been having restart problems
when playing high graphic games. I just built this system using:

Athlon XP 3200+ Barton 400FSB
1GB Kingston PC3200 RAM
Shuttle AN35N Ultra
Antec P160 Case
AIW 9800 Pro 256 bit
2 Maxtor 40GB HDD's

The case gives me 2 temp sensors. I attached one to the HDD and the other
to the back of the AIW right behind the GPU using tape. With no stress on
the card it's reading 49/50C. The Barton reads 36C and under load it hasn't
gone above 48C. AIW fan is working. I don't think ventilation is a
problem. There's 2 huge fans in this case.

Can anyone offer any insight? Thanks.

The 9800Pro core has more than three times as many transistors as the
Barton, so it is expected to run hotter. Anything less than 70 C is well
within safe limits.

The stock cooler is okay as long as you don't do voltage mods to the card.

The stock coolers may be enough if you have sufficient airflow around
the card. Most of the time you do not because of the way the cards have
their hottest components on the bottom of the card so that the heat ends
up going through the card. Maybe if you have a side fan blowing on the
card you will have enough airflow, otherwise you need to change the
stock heatsink and fan for something like the Arctic Cooler or use a PCI
slot fan below the card to exhaust the hot air. The second option is
usually cheaper and does not modify the card, if you are worried about
that, but may not be as good at cooling the card.

The stock 9800 Pro cooler was working fine for me, and I've got no intake or
exhaust fans in my case, save for the 90 mm Antec PSU fan. Hardware
"enthusiast" sites tend to be anal about system cooling.

I think in my case the airflow wasn't working around the video card so I
had to supplement it. Plus I think the components in the system have an
overall affect. I changed my Pentium 2.0 for a 3.4 Prescott and my
power supply could not handle the additional heat. The fact that the
CPU was directly under the power supply did not help either.
