Perflib_Perfdata_454.dat

~DF8364.tmp

Here are two temp files that refuse to be deleted... I actually went into
safe mode and found the second one there, and deleted it.. however it's
back now... but the first one was nowhere to be found.. Can someone tell me
what this is.. I tried to open it with notepad, and notepad could not open
it.. any ideas?

thanks Rainy

Why do you feel you need to delete these files? Especially, if you don't
know their purpose.

Temporary files are common in applications. They are used to hold temporary
data while the application is running. If you cannot delete the file, it is
inuse so don't try. You could try killing every process on your system but
then why are you using your system if not to run applications on it?

You can use the oh.exe (open handle) utility in the W2K resource kit
(ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/reskit/win2000) or the handle.exe tool from
SysInternals to see which process has the open handle on that file.

because they are in my temp folder.. and I always delete my temp files.. do
you know what they are?

thankyou so much! I did understand that some process was using this.. just
didn't know which one it could be, since this is new.. and I have not
installed any new programs.. I will check out the link you sent.. thanks
again.. Rainy

Not really. All I could find concerning this was a reference to Performance
Libraries. I did find one KB about these files getting orphaned if a
machine isn't shutdown properly:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;285798

The solution:

To delete the orphaned files, you can use an automated logon script.

The solution didn't make much sense to me though.

For me if I don't know what it is I leave it alone :-)
I may have a few unnecessary files hanging around but I have no problems
due to deleting something by mistake.

This could be a number of reasons. One could be that windows requires it or
you do not have the rights to delete it as the System itself starts it... In
some cases you can not terminate system processes. Try a Spyware search
possibly.

Hope that helps
