temp file identified after defrag

I defragged my hard drive only to find one huge file of
9GB could not be defragmented. I do a lot of video
editing on my computer and am assuming that the
appearance of this file is associated with that
activity. The file is "fmpgvideo.214.dat" and it is in
the local settings\temp subdirectory of my Documents &
Settings directory. The last time this file
was "modified" was back in February but I've done heaps
of video related stuff since then, so the "modified" date
leads me to believe that it is in fact unrelated to my
editing sessions. Therefore, can someone please tell me:
What is this file?
How did it get there?
How did it get to be so huge?
How can I defrag it? (I am currently downloading
Perfectdisk to try this - I have tried XP defragger &
Diskkeeper to no avail (multiple times))
Can I delete this file safely without affecting the
running of my applications?
How do I go about deleting the file?
Any suggestions will be most appreciated.

Chris,

Many defragmenters require contiguous free space the size of a file in order
to be able to defragment said file. In this case, the defragmenters you
have tried may be requiring 9GB of contiguous free space or else this file
will not defragment.

Perhaps the easiest thing would be to copy this file onto removable media
and delete. Then, see if any of your applications/videos have problems. If
not, then it is probably safe to dispose of this file for good.
