Tell outlook not to poll for email

The only thing I want to use outlook for is the calendar as that
is what my company uses for meetings, appt, etc. So how can
I tell it to stop checking for email?
I use OE as my mail client so I don't need Outlook to perform
that role. I've tried to go in and set various options trying to
make it so that Outlook doesn't poll my mail server but none
have worked. I'm afraid if I removed the mail account, it will
also affect other things like tasks, calendar, etc. Is that the
case? If so, is there a way I can tell Outlook not to poll for
email?

thnx,
Christoph

You can delete your account.

And it won't affect anything else? Alright, cool. Thanks for your help!

Christoph

No, it won't. Even deleting profiles don't delete pst-files. But backing up
a pst-file is always a good practise if you don't want to loose anyting ;-)

Umm, ok. I did that and it removed all my (company wide)
calendar items, tasks, etc. It wasn't just my email account
I deleted, it was the connection to our exchange server, from
which I receive my email, store calendar, task items, etc.

So again, I ask, is there a way you can tell OutlookXP not to
poll for email?

Chris

Other question. If your company provides you with e-mail and wants you to
work with Calendar etc why do you use OE? Do you have an external account
configured with OE? Why haven't you configured this account in Outlook and
stop using OE?

You can place an Exchange account in Offline mode under File-> Work Offline
but this won't make processing appointments, (assigned) tasks eassier for
you. What is so bad about using Outlook for e-mail that you continue to use
OE?

I have 2 primary issues with Outlook that keeps me from using it as my email
client:

* Newsgroups. I use them _alot_. So instead of going back and forth between
Outlook and OE to post/read newsgroups, I decided to just use OE.

* I've yet to find a way to tell Outlook to view emails in plain text. I was very
happy when that setting was added to OE as I keep getting pornographic spam
and I'd rather not be force fed the images. Plus, since spammers use those
images as beacons to determine valid email addresses, the deluge of spam I
was getting increased exponentially.

There are a few other minor reasons, but the above two are the reason why I
don't want to use Outlook as my email client.

One other thing: could you elaborate on the above. [It] won't make it any easier for
me in what respect? That I still have to use 2 applications? That setting Outlook to
work offline will affect how appointments, tasks, etc are processed?

thnx,

This doesn't work. It still polls for email. I'm using IMAP and
evidently in Outlook, there is no such thing as "offline" for IMAP.

Chris

Those are indeed reasons to keep OE as you mailclient. Although I find it
very easy to have one screen for mail (Outlook) and one for newsgroups (OE)
but of course you are free to have a different opinion on that.

You can't work offline with IMAP indeed. You can only do this when you have
an Exchange account configured. When you don't have Outlook polling for new
mail you won't receive Meeting Requests either; these are mails as well.

Since you are working with Outlook XP you can set some send and receive
options in Tools-> Options-> tab Mail Setup-> button Send/Receive... You can
even press the Edit... button to have even more advanced settings per
account. As I'm not really experienced with IMAP accounts I can't tell you
how many and how specific your settings are.

I have a Hotmail account configured that doesn't poll for mail automatically
either but does update when I click on the Inbox folder.

Also note that there a tools whcih let you receive everything in Plain Text
in Outlook as well.
