Hello,
Here's my crazy question - is there some service (free of course) that
will record a phone message and email it to me? I want it as a
substitute for the major internet answering service. I would like to
have call forward on busy with my local phone co., and while I am
online, have the incoming message transferred to something that would
email me. Any ideas?

There are a number of services that will send voice messages as WAV
attachments to emails. Depends where you are in the world. Try
www.onebox.com, www yac.com (although I dont think they email messages)
or try a web search on 'unified messaging'

Not really free, but very inexpensive and just what you are asking for:

eFax. I've used it for a few years now. You get a voice-mail box and a
number for your account. Messages left in voice mail are sent as a WAV
attachement to your email account. You can also access them by phone.
This is a free service, but they do tend to nag you to get one of their
pay ones. You also don;t have a choice of phone numbers, you may not get
a local one. It may be a toll call. I lucked out and got a local number.
I just Lol when they nag me to upgrade so I can have a local number. So,
if you don't mind the nagging in email, this does the job. I've used it
with WebTV, only recently acquired a PC. Another downside is
occassionally I have had spam faxes sent to my inbox, but that has been
rare.
