I've been trying to get Ken Golf's telemarketing phone blocker
software to work for over a week, apparently I have the wrong modem.

Info page: <http://www.kengolf.com/en/caller-id-software.htm>

So, I suspect the author wrote the program based on the modem he
had available. That means other programs might work with different
modems and I might get lucky.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a telephone blocking program
or phone firewall?

Try Call Alert at http://www.dirfile.com/freeware/call-alert.htm. It works
for me. I think this is the freeware version - (the current version is
selling for $19.95). If this is the one I have there is no documentation
but it should be rather transparent. It works like a charm - all Unavailable
or Out of Area calls can be blocked - one ring and the phone shuts down. A
blessing!

Call Alert! enables your PC to recognize the caller without the need to
answer. Call Alert! employs Caller ID service provided by your phone
company, alerting you immediately when a new call arrives. Call Alert!
notifies you of the call details unobtrusively by displaying a graphical
tool-tip in the Windows taskbar, near the system clock.

It will optionally play back a ring sound, which can be customized
depending on who's calling. You can always choose to disable all sound
alerts whatsoever, or, for example, only ring if an important person is
calling.

With Call Alert!, you can block telemarketers (or any other unwelcome
callers) easily: simply select whole or any part of a telephone number,
and add it to the "black list". Call Alert! will recognize such callers,
and disconnect them automatically after just one ring. When an unwanted
call arrives, the phone is simply disconnected.

Call Alert! uses latest technology to achieve smoothest, fastest
operation. The software uses newest Microsoft text-to-speech (TTS)
development for better quality voice announces.

Call Alert! will work on most PCs. It does not require an expensive
voice modem; usually, any modem that is already installed in your
computer will do.

I missed the op so I'll tag on your response :) Another caller ID app.
that is working well for me is PhoneTray Free 1.20
http://phonetray.traysoft.com/index.htm Even without a "voice modem" the
caller id works well and you're able to zap any incoming number you
choose.

This one is fun too. Do a Google on wav files. Pick out three or four dozen
like Carlin On Religion. Assign it to your local <fillin> religious charity
that drives you nuts.

Or get the wav file that tells telemarketers to drop your number according
to Fed law.

Or if you really want to have fun, get a few of the Nimoy and Shatner wav
files. They are past horrible. Play them for your "friends" when they call.

LOL I don't have a voice modem so haven't been able to use that feature
but wish I did. I'd like to use my desktop box as an answering machine.
I've done a little research on them but haven't been able to find one on
line I'm comfortable buying from. Even US Robotics no longer support
voice modems :( Maybe someday I'll snag one.
