He managed to completely destroy his pc's ability to
connect to the web (god knows how), I've managed to get
is family back online but there are a couple of sites
that just load as blank pages, including the ms update
site, and i've tried everything i can think of to no
avail.
Anyone offer a suggestion as to what he might have done???
I've tried disabling his (very old version of)Norton
Internet Security in case that was causing it.
Re-enabled Java
Lowered security level to default.
AV updates fine which leads me to think its not a virus,
they usually block Norton and McAffe site as well as MS.
Enabled every available protocol in the advanced options
Cleaned out and reduced his temp internet file (8 GIGS!!!)
They use web mail from wanadoo and that one of the sites
that wont load so its causing a bit of a problem.

Blank pages with Done or DNS error message?
Use View Source to check on what all is in your "blank pages".

Security option: Enable META Refresh

Related symptoms apparently caused by some popular toolbar addons.
Try uninstalling any such looking for change in symptoms.
