I installed xp home on this newly built machine around mid
november. I have an external USB 2.0 TDK VeloCD 48X CDRW
drive. I was using it for about 2 weeks and everything was
fine. It was automatically detected by xp so I didnt have
to load drivers for it. I burned a couple of CDs using this
machine. Then one day, I wanted to burn a CD only to find
the icon not in My Computer. I went to Device Manager and
saw it was listed under USB devices as Unknown Device so I
got out my "trusty" manufacturers disk and tried to load
the driver manually to no avail. It would not accept the
driver by the search for best driver automaticaly method or
by the select a driver method. TDK's tech support was
basicaly no help at all as they only asked me to do what I
already tried. It's like Windows XP no longer knows what
the burner is. I verified that yes the drive works on my
other system. Any ideas?

Hi,

To fix your problem, pls try the following steps:
Unplug all the USB devices except for the USB keyboard
and mouse(if any)

1. Start the computer in Safe mode by pressing the F8 key
during startup
2. Select the Safe mode and press Enter
3. Log on by using the local administrator account
4. Click Start, click Run, type "regedit" (without the
quotation mark) in the open box and click OK
5. In the left pane, expand the tree to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB
6. Highlight the USB key, right-click it and click
Export. Save the file to the desktop
Note: This is for backup purpose. We can go to the
Desktop and double-click the files you saved to restore
the registry.
7. Expand the USB key and click the VID key, in the right
pane, you can see the description of the USB device
8. delete all VID sub keys under the USB except the VID
keys for the USB mouse and keyboard(if any)
8. Restart the computer, log on as usual and check the
result

If the system is still cannot recognize the ext. CD/RW or
you cannot delete the VID keys, boot in safe mode and
login as administrator. Go to device manager and double
click the universal serial bus controller. Hightlight the
xxxPCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller, right click and
click uninstall, click Apply and OK. Reboot to normal.
The find new hardware message should appear and install
the USB 2.0 driver. Go to device manager again to
ascertain that the xxxPCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller
is there and windows confirm that it is working properly.
(I assumed that you have already installed SP1 or Sp1a)
Replug the Ext. CD/RW to the USB 2.0 hub

Next time, make sure to use the safely remove hardware
icon before unplug the Ext. CD/RW from the system.
