This new computer is using a linksys wireless router. I
keep losing my connection after a short while. Linksys
says my wireless connection is fine, and the problem is
with the TCP/IP stack. They say the computer is not
picking up a static IP address, and I need to contact
Microsoft to have it fixed. Microsoft in their infinite
wisdom suggested I post the problem here for an answer.

How did you contact Microsoft?
By phone or over Internet Chat?
Were you assigned a case number that starts with SRX or SRZ?
I suggest you CALL Microsoft back and have your case reopened
and further trouble shooting be done.
For one thing, it never hurts to have another technician take a
look at the case and if it still cannot be resolved one way or another
then the case can be assigned to their Research Team for further trouble
shooting. This may or may not be a Microsoft issue in the end.

One thing about wireless connections -
who knows what may be interfering with the signal at any time -
possibly some electrical device or object is disrupting it...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Or we can try trouble shooting the issue here:

What Linksys router?
What wireless adapter?
Brand name and model of computer?
XP Home or Pro?
Have all XP critical updates been installed?
IS the connection set to use a static IP address?
Is it also set to use static DNS server addresses?
Are there any third-party firewalls installed?
How about any Anti Virus programs?
Is the XP Internet Connection Firewall enabled on this wireless connection?

Please run this procedure and post back the results by copying and pasting
the information in C:\ipconfig.txt

START > RUN > cmd

Press <Enter> after each of the following commands -

cd\
ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt
exit

Now, please find C:\ipconfig.txt and copy and paste the information in a reply post
along with the answers to the other questions above.

Search the web for a file named winsockfix.zip.
