Hi,
One of the pcs i worked on was having problem connecting
to the internet through an ethernet card connected to a
modem/router. The pc was unable to get an ip address by
the dhcp service. And the problem seemed to start after
installing w2k sp4. After troubleshooting ( connected
other pc which worked fine, changed network adapter,
removed reloaded tcp/ip ptotocol etc....still had
problem) I tried to repair windows installation with w2k
cd. Did not work. Finally had to reinstall w2k in another
folder and it fixed the problem ( had to reinstall all
apps and move data files too). My question is there a way
to rebuild the network components including tcp/ip
without having to reinstall w2k ? ( i tried various
repair methods did not work).

Thanks.
..

I'm fairly certain that the only method of repairing TCP/IP in 2000 was to
remove and reinstall. In XP and 2003, you can reset it (which does the same
thing as removing and reinstalling).

While doing a manual removal and reinstallation of TCP/IP is something I
would highly discourage unless all other avenues have been fully exhausted,
this article will tell you how:

299451 - HOW TO: Remove and Reinstall TCP/IP on a Windows 2000 Domain
Controller (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=299451).

According to microsoft the problem is due to SP4 bug, they
have a hotfix for that, you need to call them to get the
hotfix. Alternately they suggest disabling DHCPMediaSense
using registry, I tried but it still didn't work.

I am having this very same experience:

"One of the pcs i worked on was having problem connecting

Can you tell me more about this bug connected to the w2k SP4 installation,
the rest of the machines on the network (Win98 and Win XP) are not
experiencing any problems pulling IP addresses from the DHCP server.

Is there any article that you can point to about this bug? I have queried
for that registry key and haven't found an article relating to a bug in
sp4. I will be happy to get a hotfix for the original poster to this
thread, but would need more info...
