What ports are open by default when XP boots? This would be with the Windows
firewall off.

Thanks

Hi
Port are always ready for action, i.e opened if you want to use this word.
It is the Firewall that closes them down. No Firewall, No closed ports.

That depends largely on your configuration.

If you have Windows File Sharing enabled, then you will probably
have ports 135-138 and 446 open. If you have an FTP Server, then
port 21 may be opened. Get the freebie program "TCPView" which will
show which ports are opened and which processes own them:

With a firewall off, there is nothing to block a port so all ports would, in
theory, be "open" by default. But if there's no program or service or task
listening to a particular port, then the traffic would be for naught since
it would arrive and have no destination.

Hi
Yap, that id why it is more accurate to say that the ports are "Ready" to be
used.
A port is Opened when something uses it.
Firewall Blocks the ports so they are not ready to be used unless the
Firewall exception table allows it.
