TCP/IP disaster

Dears,
yesterday morning I did these three following things, I don't know in which
order:
- installation of Windows/XP update;
- update of Sophos antivirus
- update of ZoneAlarm.

After the routine reboots I was in a situtation that notwithstanding my
efforts isn't still changed. I cannot communicate with any other computer, I
am writing to you from another computer. In particular:
- not any program can open a socket
- no DNS resolution
- ping allows me to ping computers located outside my network just by IP
address but the output contains semi-graphical characters

It goes without speaking that I already tried to uninstall and disable half
of the programs, Sophos and ZoneAlarm included.
What really drives me crazy is that you cannot uninstall the TCP/IP to
install it again from a clean source... or please tell me asap how it can be
done!
Thanks in advance
Best regards,
Daniele

How to determine and recover from Winsock2 corruption
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;811259

[If you have suddenly lost your Internet connection after removing spy-ware
(such as NewDotNet, and Commonname) the following steps will help restore
your connection. This works for Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP.

1.) Download WinsockFix.zip. (by: Option^Explicit)
http://members.shaw.ca/installations/WinsockFix.zip

2.) UnZip WinsockFix.zip (Pay close attention to where the file is extracted
to.)
3.) Run WinsockFix.exe.
4.) Click the Fix button.

This program will clean up your TCP/IP connection and rebuild the database.
After the program is complete, reboot and your problems should be resolved.
