Disregard. Just realized it means, "[sound] on the hour."

Gives a specific sound, which is typical for the wooden clocks of the
German Black Forest. It is produced by blowing throw a built in set of
two diatonical flutes, and operated by

(hm, where can i provide an example?) Found a link, but this clock is a
bit broken:

heh, the Google coughed up a link to another (probably free) cuckoo
clock
http://www.dipl-ing-kessler.de/developer/freigabe/kuckuck/
Its sound is much more authentic (I have lived near one for years; our
neighbour had it hanging in the room adjacent to my sleeping room; and
the cuckoo would sound twelve times at midnight)

Thank you for the background.

The first sound, it reminded me more of a cartoon. The second sound, very
familiar. Hear it when visiting my mother, big grandfather clock she has
(which she incidentally brought back to the states from Germany).

As to the frequency of the cuckoo, TClock's interpretation is once per
hour. I notice that Kuckucksuhr does quarter of hour...
the cuckoo would sound twelve times at midnight)

Number of chimes/cuckoos based on the time is cool. At least for a real
clock. On computer, it's simpler for me to glance at time display upon
hearing one sound. Reminds me, I tried out the ShipsBell program a while
back.

| Ships Bell is a program for ship captains and mariners who like

I didn't take up use of it, in fact did not even get as far as learning
the ships chime system. The main effect of trying it was just to make
me wish I was hearing those bells on a real ship...
