Taskmgr missing user names

I have noticed on several machines that I work on, with
windows XP pro and home, are running at 99% CPU usage,
with a System Idle process of 99% too. This does not
quite add up right, as sysidle is supposed to be 100%-cpu
usage...

Also on these machines I have noticed that all the
processes belong to no-one, except the sysidle process
which is owned by SYSTEM.

It doesn't appear to be a virus as it has happened on a
fresh install of windows, so can anyone enlighten me on
the occurence of this phenomenon...

Cheers,

Task manager at the bottom in the status bar.

Also the whole system does seem to be crawling, as if the
CPU is actually being used...

Do 3 things:

1. In Task Manager Performance tab, click View, Show Kernet Times.
See where the Red and Green lines are in the graph.

2. In Task Manager, Processes tab, sort on CPU (click on the CPU column).
You should see System Idle Process at the top of the list

3. In Performance (from Administrator Tools), System Monitor, click on the
% Processor Time counter (bottom of graph.
Take note of the Last, Average, Minimum and Maximum values (directly under
graph).

Let us know what you see...

I did this a short while ago, and all the stats pointed
to the same kind of results, all over 80%...

The machine has since been broken in to several parts and
redispersed, so now we see what other machine suddenly
gets the same problem...

Will let you know when it happens...

(Although it still doesn't explain the missing names in
task manager...)

(too many ...'s)

Cheers for the interest...
