TaskMgr and RegEdit won't open

I am writing for my mother's computer. She has a Dell
running XP Home Edition. When I was helping her do
something on the internest I noticed it seemed slow. I
disconnected and while looking at something else I got two
messages a few minutes apart. One wanting to report back
through the network to newoslies.serverbeer.com and one to
spoinker.dyn.nu. My mom's computer isn't on a network.

I tried to open Regedit to make corrections (I am pretty
familiar with many things to look for in it.) I also
cannot press CTRL ALT DEL to stop any running programs in
TakMgr. The windows popup and close immediately.

Are there any good steps I can take to help out?

Get LavaSoft's AdAware and Spybot Search and Destry installed, updated and
ran on the system.

Thanks. I will try that as well as a patch that help me
research some other areas. I appreciate it.
