Maybe too trivial for this forum, but... Tried to bring up taskmgr.exe (ctl-alt-del, as well as attempting to run it directly) and get the message that the file has vanished. I did have Symantec do a malware removal a couple of weeks ago, and perhaps they were too enthusiastic about removing things. But... is there any other explanation?

Also, is it worthwhile to go to the microsoft site chat service to find out what files are now missing, and get them reinstalled? My computer seems to be working OK, so far as I can determine at this time, except for not being able to bring up taskmanager.

Nothing's too trivial for us! when you say you get a message that the file has vanished. whats the exact message you receive?

Thanks for your reply.. When I used start>run>sfc/scannow, which scans the protected Windows files, the file taskmgr.exe was identified as missing. If I pursue using sfc to restore that file, it asks me to insert my Windows Professional disk, which I do not have (because this Gateway computer was purchased at CompUSA with Windows Media Center edition already installed, and they don't give you the disk). The only disk they give you is a disk for Gateway's built-in "System Recovery" option. The disk is labeled "System Recovery CD/DVD." The disk states that, if it is used, all data and files on the hard drive will be lost erased.

Regedit and msconfig are still present (I can run them from the Start>Run box).

Does this clarify the problem?

Sorry, I have to laugh, Windows Media Center ... ain't Win XP. ;)

However ... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909059

Because Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition was included with your hardware device or system, the hardware manufacturer provides technical support and assistance for this software. Your manufacturer may have customized the installation with unique components such as specific device drivers and optional settings to maximize the performance of that manufacturer's hardware. If you require technical help with Windows XP Media Center Edition, contact your manufacturer directly because the manufacturer is best qualified to support the software that the manufacturer has installed on the hardware.
Good luck with that.

It is common practice for proprietary manufactures ... 99% of them ... not to supply you with a "real" Windows disk.

Sorry, was not laughing at you directly. :thumb:

Taskmgr.exe

Actually, Windows Media Center Edition IS XP; just a variant that has additional capability and - unfortunately, as with all Windows products - additional problems.... And, the reasons to run SFC are the usual reasons: among them, to scan the status of Windows protected files, and to deal with any problems found, as necessary. Try running SFC, and you'll see what I mean. The REAL problem is, is Microsoft Chat worth a damn: do I pay my money for techs that have no idea what they're doing, like in Syamtec......

Still looking for an answer...
