I am running Win Xp on a home computer and cannot display
the task manager ( it displays for a sec and then
disappears), by either cntrl alt delete or by the right
click on the task bar. I can't start Nortons antivirus
2004 which I downloaded and installed either.I think
maybe there is a virus process running although none of
the Nortons downloads have found anything. How can I
ssee the processes that are running and kill unwanted
ones without the task manager displayinf?

Go to START, RUN, and type in MSCONFIG.
Then select the services tab.
Check the box labeled "Hide all Microsoft services".
Disable the services you do not want to start then reboot.
You could also check out the STARTUP tab to see what
programs are starting up when you boot.
Remember to use caution when disabling services or
startup programs.

Thanks for your help . I tried this but the config
window doesn't appear. I suspect a virus is hogging the
processes. Is there any other way to see what is running
and disable unwanted processes?

Had the same problem. Also Regedit would not stay open. Restart in safe mode
and open msconfig. We had a file named PHIZMDI starting up. This was the
problem. Norton, Adaware, Spybot all missed it even in safe mode. I renamed
it and removed all registry keys related to it (after exporting the keys to
be on the safe side.) Rebooted in normal mode and my problem was solved. I'm
not saying PHIZMDI is *your* problem but check your startup for anything
odd.
