Taskbar won't change from classic view

My brand new machine came with Windows XP Home edition. Try as I might, I couldn't get it to join an existing WinNT network, so I used my WinXP Pro CD from my old computer and upgraded. I got on the network fine, but now I have an annoying problem. My taskbar and start menu look similar to XP, but they are squared off and not as colorful....looking more like the classic mode. I also can't hide items not in use like you can with XP, though that option is selected. How can I get back the better-looking XP mode on the taskbar/startup menu without reverting? I have a ton of software installed and don't want to think about reinstalling it any time soon.

Anita,

I suggest you visit MS-MVP Kelly's website at
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Note the instructions at the top of the page,
then scroll down to line 164,
(Restore Taskbar to Default Functionality)

Right-click the hyperlink, then click | Save Target As |
to download the file, "xp_taskbar_desktop_fixall.vbs",
then double-click and follow the prompts.

You might also like to do some reading on "Taskbar"
at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_t.htm

You might also need to download the file,
"savesettings.reg" from Line 54,
(Save settings on exit) at
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Control Panel
| System |
/Advanced\
Performance-[Settings]
/Visual Effects\
(*) Custom
[Y] Use visual styles for windows and buttons

Set the "Themes" service to running via...

[Start]
| Run |
services.msc
[Enter]

Navigate to "Themes" service
Startup Type: [ Automatic ]
[Apply]
[Start]
[OK]

Now, in Control Panel
| Display |
/Appearance\
"Windows and Buttons"
you should have a choice of "Windows Classic Style" and "Windows XP Style"

If that does not help, then I suggest you read

Thanks. After I posted that message, I actually found the kelly site and dowloaded a regedit fix. Worked like a charm!

Great! Glad to hear it, Anita. Thanks for the feedback. :o)
