Hello

In that part of the taskbar in which the clock appears (is this the tray?)
icons seem to come & go at will although the various programs, they are
shortcut to, should be installed at startp. Is there anything I can do about
this please?

What would you like to do about the tray icons?
They are usually controlled by the applications properties; options or
preferences. Although better than Win9X, the behavior after a Explorer or
other system folder crash still wipes out many of the icons in the tray.

Thankyou. My ISP(Bt-yahoo) support asked me about a particular icon - ADSL
Alcatel modem diagnostics - which should always be in the tray, which it
wasn't. As it comes & goes for no apparent reason I was wondering whether
the "problem" may be windows related rather that Alcatel related"

Pebso

no. A diagnostic program should not be left running. There
is no need to unless you have problems. Thus the term
Diagnostics. Most programs allow you to have them start at
system startup during their install or afterwards by
choosing the appropriate options in there configuration
settings. If you wish to stop a program from starting then
go>start\run and type in msconfig and hit ok. Now click
the startup tab and uncheck any program you do not want
starting at boot up. Click you way out. If you are having
modem problems I suggest posting an exact question or
visiting the manufacturers site for the latest XP drivers.

Hi, Pebso.

That's the Notification Area. But most of us still call it the System Tray,
or SysTray for short.

You know that you can right-click on the clock, choose Customize
Notifications, and change several of the default behaviors, don't you?

RC

No I didn't know that. However right clicking doesn't give me a "customize"
choice. I'm using XP Pro should that make a difference? I'll run Kelly's
fixes as, hopefully, they'll sort the problem out.

Pebso

Thank you for that advice...I've just looked at msconfig & couldn't believe
the number of programs running at startup. I'll see whether they all need
to. My ISP sorted my modem problem but in so doing mentioned that the
diagnostic icon should be in the notification area, which led to my posting.

Make sure that the "Hide Inactive Icons" checkbox is NOT checked .
(Start - Settings - Taskbar). Or if you want to hide some icons,
click on "Customize)to edit the list so TaskMan always shows.
