Taskbar Toolbars - Quick Launch

I made a few optimization changes to my computer and the
Quick Launch toolbar disappeared. When I try to put it
back, I get the error message "Cannot create toolbar." I
get the same message when I try to put the Desktop
toolbar or any folder from my hard drive. I can get the
toolbars for any other ones (like the Address bar, Media
Player, and Links), but no folder ones.

When I tried to find an answer using Google, the only fix
I could find was that the Quick Launch folder might be
missing and to recreate it, but it is not missing.

This is the only problem I've had after the changes and
I've made the same changes on other computers and never
had this problem. The only things I changed were making
the swap file a constant size and adding the
line "ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1" to the [386enh]
section of the system.ini file.

Any suggestions?

i have the exact same problem. the only changes i've made
to my system is that i've gotten a really nasty trojan or
spyware. i've been trying just about everything i can
find from searches to remove it.

I thought that might be the problem with mine, but I ran
updated versions of both Ad-aware and Spybot - Search &
Destroy with no luck. It is possible that it's something
neither one recognizes, but I don't have any other
symptoms, so I doubt it.

I don't know if this applies to you, but you might check. I had to clean out some adware because a "search" box appeared one day on the right of the task bar. After using Ad-Aware, Norton AV and some manual deletions I was left with a task bar that wouldn't place the quick launch items when logging on. Found this post from Ramesh a little deeper down in these questions and followed the supplied link (http://tinyrurl.com/2z4sr) to his suggestions regarding editing the registry (Look one page back [6/29] under the first taskbar toolbars post from "Lisa"). Here's what I found and what worked for me:

I had a similar problem. Using regedit fixed it. I had the following in regedit:

[HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

value==C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe,

Changed "wsaupdater.exe" to "userinit.exe" in the registry and deleted the "wsaupdater.exe" file in the System32 directory.

I only used Ad-Aware in cleaning out adware files, perhaps the others would have caught and fixed this for me.

Remember that I had just removed a malware searchbox from the task bar. Your situation may differ.
