I have a Win XP SP3. Under Taskbar and Start Menu Properties, I opened
Customize Notifications and find that some of the Icons are NOT correctly
displayed. For instance, Skype Icon is shown for "Java Update Available" and
AVG Icon is shown for "Safely Remove Hardware" !

Is there anyway to change this, besides of course changing the behavior of
the Notifications for the active and inactive ones - which I am familiar
with.

Thanking you

Pressing F5 could clear that up each time. Another thought, try Kelly's
tweak to increase the icon cache:

Line 121. Increase Icon Cache

'Clear past items from Customize Notifications dialog box'
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283084 to clear *all* items, which will be
redrawn as needed.

Thank you for the KB/283084. In the Task manager, I do NOT find a tab FILE.
There are only

Image name
User Name
CPU
Mem Usage

So, having deleted the Iconstreams in the Registry Key, how do I carry out
the suggested steps in the Task Manager?

After you kill the 'explorer' process
(right-click 'explorer' > 'End Task'), press [Alt]+[F] keys or
click 'File' on the menu bar, then click 'New Task (Run...)'
On the 'Create New Task' dialog box, in the 'Open:' box, type:

explorer

then click [ok]. This will re-launch 'explorer' for you.

The entire process of deleting, killing and re-launching is
automated in this file:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/xp_pastitems.vbs
You will not need to edit the registry, nor fiddle with Task Mgr.

Download and [Save] the file to a handy folder. Double-clicking the
file gives an Alert box telling you what will happen after you click
[Yes]. At the next Alert, click [ok]. (This all works only if WMI
Service is running - normally it would be).

I hope this resolves your icon issue.

Thank you. It did resolve the issue. By the way, The Task Manager does NOT
appear to be what it should be! Can I use the kellys-korner xp_tweaks to set
it right? There is a Security Warning which says that the publisher could
not be verified?

If your Task Mgr does not show a menu-bar (nor a title-bar) it is in
mini-mode, but then [Alt]+[F] would not show the file menu. To revert
back to full-mode, double-click the border of that window.
There is a Security Warning which says that
the publisher could not be verified?

I do not have SP3, so I suggest you start a new thread, with a subject
such as Task Mgr SP3 Security Warning.

In the body, mention that you are following the procedure in KB/283084
(and also if the warning occurs while running xp_pastitems.vbs) while
killing and re-launching 'explorer'. Indicate the step when there is a
Security Warning which says that the publisher could not be verified.

Hopefully, somebody will be able to help.
