I have just recently reformatted and reinstalled XP. Everything is
fine apart from a minor problem with the task bar. It is locked and
nothing I do will unlock it.

I have unchecked "Lock Taskbar" and checked "Hide inactive icons" all
to no avail. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Perhaps there is a
registry fix for this problem.

I have done that many times. Nothing seems to unlock it. What would
happen if I installed XP over the one installed.? Would I loose a lot
and have to reformat again? It's only a little thing but just annoying
that the taskbar is not working correctly. Rest of computer is going
fine.

Alan,

Check these two registry keys (if they both exist) and make sure they are
set to 0.

Open the Registry Editor...
Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer
Value Name: LockTaskbar
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = Unlocked
1 = Locked

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Thanks very much for your help, but nothing seems to work. The first
key is correct, the second doesn't have Explorer at the end.
The first key is at 0.
It's getting late for you in the States now so don't worry about it.
Out in New Zealand where I am it's mid afternoon. If the worst come to
the worst I can always reformat again, and see what happens. But I can
use it like this, everything works O.k.

Alan,

Are you saying that you have a Value Name: LockTaskbar in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies?

No Wesley. I have
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Policies
I do not have explorer after that,or any mention of taskbar.
For Policies, I have NonEnum,Ratings,System.

I have just installed the latest windows updates and everything is
working properly. I didn't really think I needed them as I already had
installed SP2 update.

Thanks very much for your help, just hope I haven't wasted your time.

Alan Keatinge

Glad to hear it, Alan.

Whether or not you have SP2 doesn't matter. There are new updates that come
out every month. You probably need the Critical Updates.
