I'm running Windows XP home edition and my problem is
with the taskbar icons on the right hand side. Initially
everything worked OK but then I 'lose' some of the
icons. I don't have the autohide feature turned on (I've
turned it on and off several times but the icons don't
return. The only way they re-appear is if I log off and
then use an alternative account. When I log back into my
account there they are!

It's really bugging me now and I've trawled through the
knowledge base but it doen't mention this 'feature' and
how to cure it. One of the icons I use regularly with my
camera (or I would if it was there) and there doesn't
seem to be an alternative way of accessing this function.

Help Please

This is a common problem and a known "bug" in the Home edition. It
doesn't seem to occur in the "Pro" edition of XP.

There isn't a real fix, but there are several freeware and shareware
products that help.

When I was running the Home edition I used two products which all but
eliminated the problem. One allowed the scheduled running of all the
startup items and seemed to prevent "collisions" amongst the various
programs starting. The other specifically handled the appearance or non-
appearance of the icons. Sorry, but I no longer have them and cannot
remember the names of them. Do a search for "startup managers" and
"taskbar maangers" and you should come across numerous offerings.

While listening to the voices in their head blather on endlessly about
inspecific gibberish, (e-mail address removed) typed:

This can also happen when the UI shell (explorer.exe) pukes becuase of some
problem. Logging off and back in will help bring the icons back, but you
have dead processes taking up valuable cpu cycles becuase when it pukes, the
shell abandons all of the programs running in the system tray (background
processes, usually the ones from 3rd party apps) and restarts them, so now
you have 2 of each of these processes running, but only one of each is doing
anything for you. You can see this by looking in the processes list after
the shell pukes. Best thing to do when this occurs is reboot.
