Ben

I just picked up XP Professional, I've been using XP for
about a year, and I'm finding the differences are
superficial, but bloody annoying.

Probably the most annoying is the taksbar grouping.
Everytime I have seven windows of the same program open
the silly thing sticks them into a single icon on the
taskbar, which I then have to work my through. Given the
number of popups and my habit of having multiple windows
at the same time, this gets really bloody annoying.

How on earth can I turn it off.

Hi,

To make the taskbar not group items, you'll have to disable that option.
To disable it right click a blank area of your taskbar, and then bring up
the Properties.
Now you'll see the option to "Group similar taskbar buttons".
Uncheck that checkmark box then hit OK.

Ben,

Deselect the 'Group similar taskbar buttons' check box from Start Menu &
Taskbar properties.

From XP Help and Support.
-----------
To group taskbar buttons by program

Right-click the taskbar, and then click Properties.
On the Taskbar tab, select the Group similar taskbar buttons check box, and
then click Apply.
