Why? If you turn off the task pane you can't change the backgrounds, color
schemes, animations, transitions, or other items on your presentations.

Could someone tell me how to permanently delete the task
pane on the right hand side?

You can't, I'm afraid, and even if you could, you wouldn't want to -
some actions can't be completed w/o the thing.

Sure would be nice if it'd open up, let you do your thing, then
disappear again, wouldn't it?

I created a button on my toolbar to hide the Task Pane
when I want to.
Also, I was surprised to find that the task pane can be
detached and resized like other toolbars. It's sometimes
more convenient to put the task pane elsewhere on the
screen or make it really small. That might be helpful for
someone who likes working with the clipboard in the task
pane.
Finally, the slide layout task pane and start up task pane
contains a check box that allows you to display or hide it on
start up. (Obviously Steve knows all about this... just some
hints for the uninitiated. :p )

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello,

You cannot permanently turn of the task panes in the Office 2002 and 2003
applications.

If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that it's important that
PowerPoint provide this kind of functionality (of course, we would also be
curious as to WHY you want this functionality), don't forget to send your
feedback (in YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

As with all product suggestions, it's important that you not just state
your wish but also WHY it is important to you that your product suggestion
be implemented by Microsoft. Microsoft receives thousands of product
suggestions every day and we read each one but, in any given product
development cycle, there are only sufficient resources to address the ones
that are most important to our customers so take the extra time to state
your case as clearly and completely as possible.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions).
