I have a couple of windows XP machines that if you click
Ctrl-Alt-Delete and choose Task Manager nothing appears.
It drops you back to the desktop. But if you right click
the taskbar and select Task Manager it launches. Any
Ideas on how to fix this problem, please let me know.

Sounds like you have a version of the *wuaumqr* Trojan in there somewhere..
Restart your computer in safe mode.
Start, run, msconfig, startup - uncheck wuaumqr.exe or wincfg.scr or
Explorer64.exe, or any of the other variants - a google search will reveal
dozens of different names for wuaumqr...
Start, run, regedit, click on my computer, go to find and type in wuaumqr
When found, delete it (don't forget to delete from recycle bin)
start, help and support, "undo changes to your computer with system
restore," "restore my computer to an earlier time," now click on the most
recent day (before the day you got the problem) that is in bold and click
next. click next again and you should be OK.
