Please use the following link and use any of the given methods to
enable the task manager
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Taskmanager_error.htm

And get current definitions and do a thorough virus scan of your
system. This could be a legitimate message, but if it happened out of
nowhere it's probably a virus infection. I don't remember the
details, but this was a very common virus a year or so ago.

SatishP,

Thanks for the link. I tried all of the methods, but the second I delete the
item "DisableTaskMgr" it comes back again.

I know I have a malware that I am trying to fix and disable - but I need the
disabled Task Manager to get at it.

Thanks.

I should also add that i tried clicking on the "DisableTaskMgr" and changing
the value to "0", but in a split second it is set back to 1.

Thanks.

It might be a security program blocking the Registry change it needs to
make. A few, but not all, of the programs now doing this are:
Ad-aware's Ad-Watch
IBM Access Connections
McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware
Norton AV
Spyware Blaster
Spybot> Tools> IE Tweaks
Spybot- Teatimer
Spysweeper
Spyware Doctor
Windows Defender
Zone Alarm (free) 6.5 Reported to be fixed in later versions.

In the case of Zone Alarm 6.5 or Norton 2007 it actually has to be
uninstalled. Make sure the Windows Firewall is turned on until you
reinstall Zone Alarm.

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and try the change.
