Mindy:
Many apps will start a process (as an image in Task Manager) for items that
run in the background, like a firewall or anti-virus real-time protection
service. Look in the registry -
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run key. If any of the
unwanted processes you see in Task Manager appear in this Run key you can
delete the individual string values (type REG_SZ). HOWEVER, if you are
unfamiliar with editing the registry use caution - you can do irreparable
harm to your OS if you delete or modify critical system keys/subkeys/values.
So...having said that, before you edit the registry make sure you have a
"go-back" solution. If you're running XP, force a restore point before you
edit the registry. Alternatively, right-click on the Run key and select
Export. Save the exported key to a directory like "My Documents" for
instance. If your changes create problems, simply double-click on the
exported key and the settings will be imported back into the registry.
Cheers,
J
