When I open my task manager and click on the Processes tab there is a list a
mile long of the things that are running in the background on my computer.
I can't believe there are that many things that actually need to be open.
How can I figure out which ones are truly necessary for me to run my
computer and stop the ones that I don't need from loading and running?

Also, when I look on the task bar near the clock and date there are some
icons open that I always have to shut. Are they still running in the
background even though I closed them? And, how do I stop them from popping
up each time?

Welll there are a few ways to stop unwanted programs from running at
startup. One way is to go to MSconfig and uncheck the ones that you dont
want. this will prevent them from running. There are also third part
utilities available to achieve the same outcome. I use Regcleaner it is a
free download you can find it here: http://www.jv16.org/ it works very well
but its your option this program will also allow you to clean up useless
entries in your registry. Also many programs give you the option to set them
not to run on startup. If your system is running very slow you may have
spyware or adware, the plague of computers now. Id reccomend you get a
spyware remover. there are several free ones available. Microsoft just
released a free version you can find that here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=321cd7a2-6a57-4c57-
a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en Also there is another one that i use that
works very well and is also free it is spybot search and destroy available
here: http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html hopefull these will help you
clean up your system.

www.google.com, usually the first link you will find on any search is
something like liutilities.com which will give you a quick synopsis of any
file and what it does and where it came from. You're right in that the list
shouldn't be a mile long, but how many depends on the system configuration.
Anywhere from 20-35 could be normal.

Click start/run and type msconfig, then click ok. Go to the startup tab and
uncheck the unneeded/undesired ones. Click apply/ok and reboot. This will
also reduce the number of related processes you are seeing in Task Manager.
