task manager wont stay open

When i try to open either the task manager or the system
configuration utility it wont stay open for longer than 2
seconds. Once my mouse scrolls over it the display
closes. Whats going on??!

Try the system file checker tool which will need your XP

CD to be inserted for copying needed files from. Just
click the start-run, and type in this; " sfc /scannow "
with that space after sfc. This will run as Windows File
Protection and it checks for either missing or corrupted
windows system files. And check your RAM too, so that it
is firmly seated in the board slot, and you have a
minimum of 256 mb of good memory installed. Good luck.

I have a similar problem in that task manager won't load but msconfig will.
Taskman.exe is in the Windows folder but does nothing when clicked.
