Task Manager not ending processes

First, let me apologize if this is a common question: I've just spent the
last two hours reading through as many messages on these boards as I could
find that might pertain to my problem, but maybe I'm looking in the wrong
place. Regardless, here's my issue:

When I go to the "processes" window of the task manager, there are several
items I cannot "end process" to when highlighted and "ended". It asks if I'm
sure I want to do that, and I say yes (I did make sure I wasn't supposed to
say "no" for some reason -- either one I choose gives me the same result),
and then nothing happens. The process doesn't end.

In addition to this, I am frequently unable to shut down my computer via
either Task Manager or the Start menu (I have my laptop set to shut down when
I hit the power button, and that works, but it doesn't go through the whole
process of "system shutting down").

I have Norton Antivirus 2005, and it automatically updates (Live Update) and
is set to scan my system weekly -- I just ran another scan to be safe, but
that doesn't seem to be a problem.

Is this a common problem? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I would suggest:

1. Make sure you have all Windows OS critical updates installed.
2. Install any updates that are available for your applications.
3. Install the latest drivers for your PC and its peripherals.
4. Install Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy, download their
updates, immunize the system, and run a scan with each of them.

Do these processes have names? The names would help someone to help you.

Some processes are system precesses and you cannot End Process on them, but
they usually popup with a message to that effect.
