By mistake, I pulled a document folder shortcut onto the
task bar (I was aiming for the Quick Launch Bar but
missed, or, rather, I forgot I hadn't enabled it yet).
Now I've got a file from the folder permanently on the
task bar and can't get rid of it without deleting the
file itself. Any ideas? Many thanks

Gary

Very many thanks but unfortunately that doesn't work. If
I drag it from the task bar to the destination folder, it
won't let me because it is already there. If I delete
it, the copy in the original folder is also deleted, and,
to rub it in, the next file in the folder takes its place
on the task bar. Dragging it onto the desk top puts a
copy of it there but its still on the task bar. Never had
this before.

Hi, Gary.

Permanently? It survives a reboot? That's MOST unusual! Well, maybe not.
Read on.

What happens when you click on the icon in the Taskbar? From your
description, I would expect Windows Explorer to open to that folder. Click
the Red X and that window should close. And the icon should disappear from
the Taskbar. Does it?

If the icon comes back after reboot, go to Folder Options and click the View
tab. Under Advanced settings, scroll down to Restore previous folder
windows at logon. If there is a check in the box, remove it. Then Restart
and see if the icon reappears.

You may have to make a copy of the folder with the misplaced item, place it
in a separate folder so named as to easily locate, THEN delete the original
folder, then delete the item stuck on the Taskbar. Then you move things
back pre-placement. Hope this isn't too confusing..

Thanks for getting back to me. Unlocking the task bar
reveals that the folder icon and title is in its own
section of the task bar, like, for instance, the quick
launch is. When I click on the icon the folder opens and
when I red X it, the folder window closes, but the whole
time the task bar icon remains, and I've restored
defaults in Folder Options. The icon and title is
accompanied by an arrow symbol/button >> and clicking on
this reveals a drop-down (actually, up) for the other
files and folders in the next-level-up folder, the one I
dragged to the task bar by mistake in the first place.
I'm really grateful for your help with this irritating
little problem.

Cheers

It sounds like your actions may have created and activated a new toolbar.
Right click the taskbar and look under Toolbars. If there's an extra one
that wasn't there before, click to remove the check next to it.

The answer! Ta muchly.

Great catch, Sharon!

Seems I saw questions from another MVP about a similar "extra toolbar on the
Taskbar" recently. If you run across that thread before I do... ;<)

Thanks, RC but had a head start. I'm a great fan of toolbars. Create them
for current projects and toss them when I'm done with them. If I see the
other thread and you haven't been there yet, I'll pop in on it.

How's your other reading coming along? Haven't started yet but hope to
soon.
