Task Bar

When I 'moused over' the Time at the right end of task bar it used to change
to display the Date. Now it does not do so, except sometimes I can get a
sliver of a date showing slightly. I can drag the task bar up to increase
it's size and then the day and date show but on the blue background but the
task bar is too big.

Help would be appreciated please as to why it has changed.

Unchange whatever you've been changed lately. You modified something.

This is a bug in Windows that's been around since day one and never fixed. What causes the problem is that the Tooltip (the pop up that shows the date) is programmed to always be on top of other windows and the Taskbar is also always on the top. This creates a conflict.

Here is some information originally posted by MVP Wesley Vogel. Note, the fix described here will fix the problem until it appears the next time.

Not really. This is a known problem. Either reboot or open the Task
Manager...

Ctrl + Shift + Escape | Processes tab | Locate and highlight
explorer.exe | Right click explorer.exe | End Process | Answer
Yes | File | New Task (Run...) | Type: explorer | OK

End Task on explorer.exe will make your Desktop and all programs disappear.
Restarting explorer will bring everything back.

Q: "why the taskbar or the tray or taskbar toolbars sometimes lose their always on top setting and their tooltips show behind top level windows"

A: It's not that the taskbar loses always-on-top; it's that there are two always-on-top windows, the tooltip and the taskbar, and they end up fighting with each other.

There is a better way:
Go to Start menu > All programs > Right click something > Choose Sort by Name

The above method solves this bug for sometime.

Thanks very much, 'it' seems to have cleared itself but I'll keep the notes
for next time.

I couldn't find any reference in MS KB.

Sorry about the broken links, I was just quoting that entire article and Google truncated the links.

The right click sort by name does work, but is problematic for some users who have spent a lot of time customizing the start menu order to their liking. Also, if you perform another sort by name in the future, for whatever reason, you need to remember to perform it twice or the problem is guaranteed to re-appear.

The log off/log on, is the quickest way to solve the problem without affecting any customized settings.
