I'm baffled about how Application icons are placed in the Notification Area
aka System Tray.

I have a collection of junk in the past items section that I'd love to get
rid of forever. I also have a few things I'd like to add to the System
Tray. How do you delete stuff?

Is there a folder some place? What's the story?

Thanks...

Icons are added to the Notification Area by running or loaded programs. To
remove them, check in each program's options, and uncheck every option which
says something like "Place icon in Tray".

Also, check your startup items in the Startup folder in All Programs of the
Start menu, and run msconfig and remove any program you dont really need
found in the "Startup" tab. Be careful, however. Some, maybe even many,
programs in the Startup tab of msconfig are necessary for the running of
your system, such as sound/video card driver programs, etc. It's very easy
to mess up your system by going in msconfig and randomly turning off
programs.

There are programs which will add a program icon to the Notification Area
for those programs you want there. Otherwise, there are no definite
Microsoft-supplied utilities which add icons to the Notification Area.
These icons are normally added and removed under program control.

I performed the actions listed here to clear out my old items, but it also removed my chevron (double arrow) in the process. Now I can no longer hide inactive icons in the notification area. I've tried turning the option on and off to see if that would restore the chevron, but it didn't work. Reboots also don't help. If I customize the first icon in the tray to be "always hide" the chevron comes back, but none of the other icons will hide when they're inactive. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Thanks!
